If you want to do the work yourself, Zencart is one of the best open source solutions. It’s free, so the price is right. I worked with http://www.host-99.com and got very good service and support (not for Zencart help, just for getting things in place, etc.) We looked at the idea of doing our own software updates, setting up our own payment gateways, backing up our store, and decided that the Zencart solution wasn’t right for us because we didn’t want to get mired in technical stuff. And you still have to pay for web hosting.
For the store I maintain for a client, we ultimately decided to go with Volusion. They have a nice small startup package (including a demo), can grow as big as you please, and host some really big name stores. Plus, unlike Zencart, Volusion does all the software upgrading, backing up, etc. (of course, you still have to learn how to use the software, add your products, etc). Volusion has a package where you can start a small store for $20/mo for the first few months and then it goes to $30/month. And, probably most important, I have found their customer service distinctly superior. It’s 24/7 including holidays (I called on July 4 one time because we had an issue), and the people really know what they are talking about. Their not just reading their web help manual back to you.
And no, I get no kickback from Volusion. I am just a happy client of Volusion with a client who is happy with Volusion.
You should look into ecommerce software made by interspire:
